Moving abroad is stressful enough without the added complexity of relocating a pet. But with the right planning timeline, the right vet and a reliable transport service, a UK to Europe pet relocation is entirely manageable.
This guide covers the document process, what timeline to follow and how to find a licensed pet transport service for the move.
The main challenge: the AHC window
The single biggest planning constraint for UK to Europe pet relocation is the Animal Health Certificate (AHC). This document — required by EU member states for pets arriving from the UK — must be issued by a UK Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel.
That is a tight window. It means you cannot prepare the AHC well in advance. You need the vet appointment confirmed and the travel date locked in before you can get it issued.
Recommended planning timeline
8+ weeks before
Confirm rabies vaccination is current. If not, vaccinate now and wait for immunity period before applying for AHC.
4 weeks before
Book a UK Official Veterinarian for the AHC. Confirm the vet holds OV status. Note the required issue window (within 10 days of travel).
2 weeks before
Confirm travel date and pet transport booking. Have your vet appointment scheduled.
10 days before
AHC issued by UK Official Veterinarian. The 10-day window starts from this date.
Day of travel
Documents checked at Eurotunnel or ferry terminal. Your pet is loaded and the journey begins.
Rabies vaccination: the hidden delay
If your pet's rabies vaccination is due for renewal — or was never given — this needs to happen before the AHC can be issued. More importantly, some EU countries require the vaccination to have been administered at least 21 days before travel. If you vaccinate too close to the departure date, entry may be refused.
Check the specific requirements of your destination country with your vet. France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany all accept the standard UK rabies vaccination with the required validity period, but confirm this applies to your pet's situation.
Which route to Europe?
For most UK to Europe relocations, the journey goes via Eurotunnel LeShuttle from Folkestone to Calais. From Calais, road routes continue to France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. For very long destinations like southern Spain or Italy, air transport may be worth considering alongside a road option for the cross-Channel section.
Preparing your pet for the move
A relocation is a one-way journey to a new home. For the animal, that means a full day in a vehicle followed by arrival in an unfamiliar environment. Some practical steps to reduce stress:
- Get your pet used to the carrier several weeks before travel
- Maintain regular feeding and exercise schedules in the days before the journey
- Pack familiar bedding or a worn item of clothing in the carrier
- Ask your vet about anxiety reduction options if your pet is particularly sensitive
