Cat Travel Through Eurotunnel

2026 Tips for a Calm, Prepared Crossing

18 Jun 2026

Eurotunnel LeShuttle is widely considered one of the better options for travelling with cats between the UK and France. The crossing from Folkestone to Calais (or vice versa) takes around 35 minutes and pets stay in your vehicle throughout. There is no cargo hold, no separation and no extended time in an unfamiliar space.

That said, the crossing itself is only part of the picture. Getting it right means having the right documents, preparing the carrier properly and knowing what to expect at the terminal.

What documents does a cat need for Eurotunnel?

Whether you are travelling from the UK to France or from France to the UK, your cat needs:

  • A microchip (ISO standard 15-digit chip)
  • A valid rabies vaccination
  • For UK entry from France: an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or a pre-2021 EU pet passport, issued by an Official Veterinarian
  • For EU entry from the UK: an AHC issued by a UK Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel

Cats do not need tapeworm treatment when entering Great Britain, unlike dogs. But all other entry documents apply in full.

What happens at the Eurotunnel terminal?

At the Eurotunnel check-in terminal, you will need to present your pet's travel documents. Staff or Border Force officers will check that your pet's documents are in order before you proceed to loading. This is where incomplete or incorrectly completed documents cause delays.

Pets are not removed from the vehicle at any point during the process. Checks are carried out through the window or at a designated pet check point near the terminal building. Confirm current procedures with Eurotunnel when you book.

Tips for travelling with a cat through Eurotunnel

Use a familiar carrier

A carrier your cat already knows is far less stressful than one they have never seen before. Place a worn item of clothing inside a few days before travel to make it smell familiar.

Keep the carrier in the vehicle

Cats generally travel better when the carrier stays inside the car during the crossing. The vehicle becomes a contained, familiar environment rather than an open ferry deck.

Avoid feeding immediately before departure

A light meal two to three hours before the journey is usually better than feeding just before. Motion sensitivity varies between cats.

Do not rush the loading process

At the Eurotunnel terminal there are checks to complete before boarding. Allow time. A rushed loading process adds to stress for the animal.

Cover the carrier partially

A light blanket over part of the carrier reduces visual stimulation during the crossing and can help the cat settle.

Is Eurotunnel better than the ferry for cats?

For most cats, yes. The reasons are straightforward:

  • The crossing is short — around 35 minutes compared to 1.5 hours or more on a ferry
  • Cats stay in the vehicle for the entire crossing
  • There is no need to navigate decks, gangways or unfamiliar spaces
  • The enclosed nature of the tunnel can actually be calming for cats that feel secure in confined spaces

Ferry travel can work well too, but it depends on the operator's pet policies and whether the cat will tolerate the longer crossing and vehicle separation requirements.
