Taking Your Dog from the UK to Spain
Documents, Route Planning and What to Expect (2026)
Taking a dog from the UK to Spain is one of the longest overland pet transport routes in Western Europe. Depending on the starting point in the UK and the destination in Spain, the total distance can be anywhere from 1,600 to over 2,000 kilometres. That includes the Channel crossing and the full drive through France.
For dog owners considering this journey, the planning and document requirements are the same as for any UK-EU pet travel — but the scale of the trip demands more preparation around rest stops, overnight accommodation and timing.
What documents does a dog need to travel from the UK to Spain?
Spain is an EU member state, so the requirements are the same as for France or any other EU country:
- A microchip (ISO 15-digit, implanted before the rabies vaccination)
- A valid rabies vaccination, current at the time of entry into Spain
- An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by a UK Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel
Spain does not currently impose additional requirements beyond the standard EU entry rules for pets from the UK, but always confirm current requirements with your vet or the Spanish consulate before travel, as rules can change.
The AHC 10-day window and a long journey
If the UK to Spain journey includes an overnight stop in France, the AHC must still be valid when you enter Spain. A multi-day journey that starts close to the 10-day limit may not leave enough buffer. Plan the vet appointment and travel date carefully.
Route options from the UK to Spain
The most common overland route from the UK to Spain is:
- UK to Folkestone by road
- Eurotunnel LeShuttle from Folkestone to Calais (35 minutes)
- Road through France via Paris or Tours to the Spanish border
- Cross into Spain via the Basque Country (San Sebastian) or Catalonia (Perpignan to Barcelona)
- Continue to destination in Spain
The total driving time from London to Madrid, for example, is around 18 to 20 hours before breaks. A minimum of one overnight stop in France is strongly recommended for the dog's welfare.
Overnight stops with a dog
France has a range of pet-friendly accommodation options along the main motorway routes south. When planning the journey:
- Book pet-friendly accommodation in advance — do not assume availability on the route
- Allow time for exercise and rest at each stop
- Carry water and food for the dog throughout the journey
- Avoid confining the dog in a hot vehicle during lunch stops
Using a private pet transport service for UK to Spain
The UK to Spain route is long and demanding. Many dog owners opt for a private pet transport service rather than driving the full distance themselves. Silver Pet Travel can discuss UK to Spain transport options depending on the destination and timing.
For very long routes, we discuss the full plan openly with the owner before confirming — including overnight stop locations, total journey time for the dog and whether a multi-day journey is appropriate for the animal's age and condition.
Returning to the UK from Spain
For the return leg, your dog will need a new AHC issued by a Spanish Official Veterinarian within 10 days of UK arrival, plus tapeworm treatment by a vet within 24 to 120 hours of arriving in Great Britain. Plan the Spanish vet appointments carefully and allow enough lead time.
